About This Print

When the afternoon sun positions itself behind Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde, the iconic scene transforms into pure silhouette. This Maine lighthouse print captures the dramatic beauty of backlit architecture — the white lighthouse tower and its distinctive wooden walkway rendered in dark profile against a sky alive with sunlit clouds. Rocky shores anchor the foreground while calm harbor waters complete this classic coastal composition. This is Marshall Point stripped to its essential forms, powerful in its simplicity.

The Most Photographed Walkway in Maine

Marshall Point Lighthouse’s wooden walkway is one of Maine’s most recognizable and beloved features. Built to provide access from the keeper’s house to the lighthouse at the end of the rocky point, this covered walkway has become as famous as the lighthouse itself. Its geometric structure and repeating archways create striking visual patterns, especially when captured in silhouette.

The walkway gained international fame as the turnaround point in the movie “Forrest Gump,” where the character runs to the end, pauses at the lighthouse, and turns back. Since then, thousands of visitors have walked this same path, experiencing the view out over Port Clyde Harbor and Muscongus Bay. But few see it quite like this — transformed by light into a study in shadow and form.

Built in 1832 and rebuilt in 1858, Marshall Point Lighthouse has guided vessels into Port Clyde Harbor for nearly two centuries. The keeper’s house now serves as a museum, but the lighthouse and walkway remain active and accessible, inviting visitors to experience this piece of maritime history.

The Art of Silhouette

What makes this photograph so compelling is the way it reduces a familiar scene to pure form and contrast. The lighthouse and walkway become dark shapes against a luminous sky, their architectural details suggested rather than shown. The sun hides behind dramatic clouds, creating a burst of light that draws your eye to the top of the frame while illuminating the cloud formations in shades of white and gray against deep blue sky.

The composition is carefully balanced. Rocky shores fill the foreground in dark, textured masses that ground the image. The lighthouse and walkway create strong vertical and horizontal lines in the middle ground. The harbor waters provide a calm, reflective surface that separates foreground from background. And above it all, that spectacular sky dominates, filling more than half the frame with its play of light and shadow.

This is silhouette photography at its finest — using backlight to emphasize form, create mood, and transform the familiar into something more graphic and striking. The late afternoon timing is crucial; earlier or later and the effect disappears.

Note from the Photographer:

“Captured on a late afternoon when I noticed the sun positioning itself perfectly behind the lighthouse. I moved down to the rocky shore to get low and emphasize the walkway’s structure against the sky. The clouds were cooperating beautifully, creating that dramatic backlit effect. This is one of my favorite Marshall Point images — completely different from the typical postcard view. Sometimes the best way to photograph an iconic subject is to let the light do the work and keep everything simple.”
